Here’s an overview of some of the top games in sports being played on April 29th. Today, we’re taking a closer look at five games from Major League Baseball and MLS.
San Diego Padres vs. Pittsburgh Pirates – 6:35 PM ET
Kicking off our daily rundown is the San Diego Padres facing the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Padres are currently 14-7 and have won their last four games. Sean Manaea, the 2-2 LHP, will get the start for the Padres tonight. He’s tasked with preventing the Pirates batters from getting an early stat.
The Pirates need to win this game after losing four in a row. Unfortunately, they’re facing a team that just beat them 7-3. JT Brubaker, the starting pitcher for the Pirates tonight, has a record of 0-2 this season. The last time the Pirates won was against the Chicago Cubs, they’ll need to recapture that magic tonight.
Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers – 7:10 PM ET
The Chicago Cubs were frankly embarrassed by the Cubs in Game 1 of this series. After an 11-1 loss, the 8-12 Cubs will look to get a win in game two. Starting on the mound is Justin Steele, who has a 1-2 record this season. As long as the Cubs can avoid giving up 11 runs, they’ll have a better chance to win tonight.
The Milwaukee Brewers have won four games in a row including their recent win over the Cubs. They swept the Pirates easily and now look to do the same to the Cubs. Their team batting average of .217 is slightly concerning though. We’ll have to see if their batters can put up a similar performance against Steele.
Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets – 7:10 PM ET
You might have to flip between the Cubs and Brewers game and this one. The Philadelphia Phillies are 10-11 this season but have a 2-6 record on the road. The good news for Phillies fans is they’re starting Kyle Gibson, the 2-1 RHP with an ERA of 3.47. They’re also fifth in total runs in Major League Baseball with 96.
On the opposite side, Taijuan Walker will get his first start of the season. So far, Walker has only pitched two innings but put together four strikeouts in those innings. The Mets are 15-6 this season, primarily because of their incredible batting. Ranking second in MLB, the team has a batting average of .261.
Chicago Fire FC vs. New York Red Bulls – 8:00 PM ET
Considering there are no NBA or NHL games to watch tonight, MLS is your next best bet aside from MLB. The Chicago Fire FC, currently 2-4-2, faces off against the New York Red Bulls, who are 4-2-2. This is a big game for Chicago, who currently sit at the 10th spot in MLS.
The New York Red Bulls are second in MLS and following closely behind the Philadelphia Union. A win here could mean that the Red Bulls get to jump ahead and lead in the standings. They’ve scored 13 goals this season, a strong and efficient offense. Look for the Red Bulls to come out of this one as the victor.
Detroit Tigers vs. Los Angeles Dodgers – 10:10 PM ET
Our final game of the day is the Detroit Tigers against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Tigers, 6-13, find themselves against one of the best teams in baseball. Beau Brieske, who is 0-1 this season, is tasked with slowing down the batters of the Dodgers. To add even more trouble for Detroit, Clayton Kershaw is starting for the Dodgers tonight.
Kershaw is 3-0 this season, throwing 23 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched. With an ERA of 2.65, Kershaw ranks among the best pitchers in the league to start the season. Look for the Dodgers to get an early lead here and for Kershaw to prevent the Tigers from charging back.
