Here’s an overview of some of the top games in sports being played on May 14. Today, we’re taking a closer look at five games from Major League Baseball and the NHL.
Boston Bruins vs. Carolina Hurricanes – 4:30 PM ET
With no NBA games today, we can look at more of the NHL games happening today. The first one we’ll go over is the Boston Bruins versus Carolina Hurricanes. The series is currently tied at 3-3, so it’s win or go home. Facing the Hurricanes at home is a tall task for any team, as Carolina was 29-8-4 at home in the regular season and all three of their home games in this series.
The most recent game ended in a 5-2 win for the Boston Bruins. Boston was at home in this game and in the previous game, they lost 5-1 when they were on the road. Carolina’s defense will be the difference-maker tonight. On average, the Hurricanes allowed just 2.44 goals per game. We think the Hurricanes will pull off a win tonight at home.
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Tampa Bay Rays – 6:10 PM ET
The Toronto Blue Jays are 17-16 overall but have a 7-10 record on the road. Today, they’ll face the Tampa Bay Rays, who are 20-13 with a 10-7 home record. On the mound tonight for the Blue Jays is Hyun Jin Ryu, in his first start of the season. Ryu has an ERA of 13.50 in just 7.1 innings pitched.
The Rays batters should do well against Ryu who has allowed 11 hits and 2 home runs as well. As a team, the Rays have a batting average of .236, which is exactly the same as the Blue Jays. In the first game of this series, the Rays won 5-2, we expect a similar outcome today.
Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Toronto Maple Leafs – 7:00 PM ET
In the second of three Game 7’s on the day, the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Tampa Bay got the most recent win, a 4-3 win at home on Thursday. They’ve been able to beat the Maple Leafs in Toronto before in this series, but can they pull it off in Game 7? Finding a way to stop Auston Matthews should be priority number one for them tonight.
The Maple Leafs get the benefit of playing at home where they’re 31-8-2. With such a strong record at home, it’ll be tough for the Lightning to take them out tonight. They come in at -125 and have reported no injuries tonight. However, Toronto has not won a playoff series since 2004, and that will no doubt be weighing on their minds. Although this will likely be a close game, we’ll take the Lightning to win it all today.
Seattle Mariners vs. New York Mets – 7:10 PM ET
The 15-18 Seattle Mariners head to New York to face the Mets today. The Mariners will send George Kirby out to the mound, in his first start of the season. The main issue for the Mariners is that they haven’t done well at the plate this season. As a team, they have a batting average of .228, but have a solid .312 on-base percentage.
The Mets will send one of their best out to the mound with Chris Bassitt getting the start. Bassitt is 4-2 this season with a 2.45 ERA over the course of 36.2 innings. The Mets have one of the best batting averages in Major League Baseball at .252. They’re also playing at home tonight, so we’ll take the Mets to win here.
Los Angeles Kings vs. Edmonton Oilers – 10:00 PM ET
The final game of the day is Game 7 between the Los Angeles Kings and Edmonton Oilers. The Kings lost the most recent game of the series, which they played at home. Now, to win the series, they have to beat the Oilers in Edmonton. This is going to be a tough task for the Kings who lost to the Oilers 6-0 in Game 2.
The Oilers have a tough test here as well as they’ve struggled at times with poor defense and sub-par goaltending. Throughout the season, L.A. only averaged 2.84 goals per game, and they’re at 2.83 for the series. However, Edmonton is still on the brink of elimination despite averaging 4.17 goals per game in the playoffs, third-most of any team.
Expect a riled-up home crowd to play a factor in this one, and take Edmonton at home tonight over the Kings.
