The preseason AP top 25 has a familiar name in the lead position, with Gonzaga continuing their string with the number one ranking, which they held throughout their 2020-2021 season, which came up just one victory short of becoming the first team since Indiana in 1976 to complete a campaign with an unblemished record and a national championship.
Instead, the Bulldogs were defeated 86-70 by Baylor in the title game and finished the season with a 31-1 record.
There are 11 teams in the top 25 that weren’t included in the final AP ranking last season, several that are among the who’s who of college basketball, including 2021 Final Four participant UCLA, Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, and UConn.
The SEC and Big Ten lead all conferences with five of their members in the ranking, followed by the ACC with four and the Big 12 with three.
