UFC 248 Top Headlines
- Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya (18-0) will defend his title for the first time against 3rd-ranked contender Yoel Romero (13-4). Adesanya earned his belt last October with a knockout win over Robert Whittaker. Romero has had several chances to fight for the middleweight belt over the past couple years but has come in overweight on multiple occasions.
- Dana White was originally hoping to set up a title fight between Adesanya and 2nd-ranked contender Paolo Costa. Hopes for that bout were lost when Costa suffered a biceps injury that was expected to keep him out of the cage for nine months. In astonishing fashion, Costa recovered in just three months. White was eager to organize the Adesanya-Costa fight again but Adesanya insisted on fighting Romero instead. Adesanya’s hesitation stems from his suspicion of Costa: “How do you get over a nine-month possible bicep injury in three months?”
- In the co-main event Saturday night, Joanna Jedrzejczyk (16-3) looks to reclaim her strawweight title against Weili Zhang (20-1). Jedrzejczyk had a long run with the belt between 2015 and 2017 before losing it to Rose Namajunas. Although Jedrzejczyk comes in as a slight underdog (+145), her confidence is through the roof: “I plan on taking back what belongs to me in the strawweight belt. I ran this division for two years and eight months. This will be a perfect night for me.”
